Devale Johnson Added to the Roster for 2019-20
KINGSTON, R.I. – Rhode Island men's basketball head coach David Cox announced that forward Devale Johnson has committed to the Rams for the 2019-20 season.
Johnson - a 6-7 forward from Brooklyn, N.Y. - is a junior college transfer coming to Rhody from Williston State College. He will have two seasons of eligibility for the Rams.
"Devale is a long and athletic player," Cox said. "We are getting a versatile forward with a big-time shooting stroke. He will add to our overall depth while providing us with additional perimeter shooting."
Johnson has an impressive seven-foot wing span. While at Williston State last season, he averaged 13.3 points and 8.6 rebounds while playing 22.6 minutes per game. A strong shooter, he made 42.8 percent (65-of-152) from beyond the 3-point arc. Johnson also proved adept at the free throw line, hitting 75.6 percent (31-of-41) of his attempts from the stripe.
A consistent scorer for the Tetons, Johnson scored in double figures 22 times in 30 games. He also posted 10 double-doubles and grabbed at least 10 rebounds 11 times. Active on both ends of the floor, Johnson averaged 1.8 blocks per game.
Williston State finished the season 21-11. Johnson earned first team all-conference honors in the MonDak Conference, twice being recognized as the league's player of the week. He finished the regular season ranked fifth in the country among junior college players with 216 defensive rebounds while helping lead Williston State to the MonDak Conference title, as well as the NJCAA Region 13 District title en route to a bid in the. NJCAA Division I Championship.
Johnson will be eligible immediately and is expected to join the team for the fall semester.
